was current in his day but fills it with Christian truth. Such a ploy on his part strengthens the possibility that he did the same in verses 8 and 9 (see the comment there). What, then, did Paul mean by contentment? Was the idea of sufficiency, which is inherent in the word, alien to his thinking? That this was not the case can be seen from his use of the word in 2 Corinthians 9:8 where he writes in all things and at all times, having all that you need.
